Working With Roots, Herbs & Spiritual Supplies

Roots, herbs, botanicals, minerals, and curios have long been used in Hoodoo and Conjure according to their traditional spiritual associations. Different materials are chosen depending on the intention of the work, such as protection, prosperity, love, cleansing, uncrossing, road opening, or reversal.

Learning the purpose of each ingredient is an important part of rootwork. Rather than choosing ingredients simply because they are available, select materials whose traditional uses correspond with the condition you are working on.

Choosing Your Spiritual Supplies

Begin with the intention of the working. Once the purpose is clear, choose roots, herbs, and spiritual supplies traditionally associated with that condition.

For example, one working may call for cleansing and protection materials, while another may focus on prosperity, love, reconciliation, road opening, or removing obstacles.

More ingredients do not necessarily make a working stronger. Choose materials deliberately and understand why each one is being used.

How It Was Set

Working With Your Ingredients

Before beginning, learn the traditional purpose and safe handling of each ingredient you plan to use. Roots, herbs, powders, minerals, and curios can be incorporated into spiritual work in different ways depending on the tradition and type of working.

Some materials may be used around candles, placed in containers or spiritual workings, carried, displayed on an altar, or used in other traditional ways.

Always research unfamiliar materials before handling them. Some traditional roots and herbs can be irritating, toxic, or unsafe to burn or ingest.
